Jambalaya is a quintessential one-pot dish from New Orleans, and while Mardi Gras has already passed that doesn’t have to stop us from enjoying some delicious Creole-inspired food. This dish tastes just like my childhood; not because I was raised in New Orleans or anything exciting like that, we just ate this dish a lot growing up. It's protein-packed, full of veg, and comes together quickly and easily at the end of the work day (with 2 entrepreneurs for parents, quick & easy was key on weeknights). I've added my own spin to this traditionally Creole dish by loading up the…

This photo was taken of me at the end of a hot & sunny vacation in Mexico. As you can see, no sun rays are actually allowed to touch this face / neck / chest. Yes vanity, and trying to look 26 forever, has a little something to do with my decision to cover up in the sun, but I also come for a family of melanomas and am doing everything I can to correct the damage I did in tanning beds in my teens (thankfully I wised up a few years into my undergrad degree and have spent the…

Goes to Mexico for a week, comes home a mezcal expert ... So, alcohol is definitely a tricky topic. On one hand, we have studies telling us wine is great for the heart, beer can prevent prostate cancer, and women that drink wine daily have lower BMI's than those who abstain. On the other, researchers have found that even 1 drink weekly can increase a woman's risk of developing breast cancer in her lifetime and one study even associates moderate drinking with an increased risk of all cause mortality (also know as the death rate from all causes of death for…

To balance the cold of winter this doctor is currently in her tiny Toronto kitchen whipping up a steady stream of hot & spicy Mexican-inspired recipes. In additional to experimenting with a ton of Mexican flavours, most of my cooking as of late also incorporates one or more of these delicious sauces all inspired by my trip to Mexico. PrintSpicy Mexican Chili Oil We learned a variation of this sauce in our Mexican cooking class and I've been tinkering with the ratios at home for a few weeks now. I've finally nailed a version that tastes exactly like the one our…

My fascination with this traditional Mexican tortilla filling started last month in a cooking class that I attended while in Mexico. The original dish was delicious (or so I was told), but unfortunately I wasn't able to try it since it was loaded with dairy. I couldn't wait to get back to my kitchen and healthify this protein-packed, poblano-loaded weeknight meal and I'm proud to say I nailed this recipe on the first try! We've made this dish a few times since I've been home it and it makes me smile and think of Mexico every time I whip up a…

If you following along on instagram you may already know that this doctor just returned from a glorious, sunny, soul-full week in Todos Santos Mexico. As excited as I am to post my favourite new Mexico-inspired recipes, I would be remiss not to first post all of the Bali-inspired recipes that I've been hoarding in my kitchen & on my computer since May! Travel is by far my biggest inspiration when it comes to the way I cook. I've learned so much in my travels to places like Nicaragua, Tobago, Cuba, Costa Rica and Portugal, and I always come home…

Paleo Fish Tacos with Jalapeño Slaw + Spicy Sunflower Seeds This fish taco recipe has a lot of components, so bare with me here, I promise you all will be worth it come dinner time. I've made these grain-free paleo tacos weekly for most of the summer so trust me when I tell you that your taste buds will be blown away by the flavour combination of spiced white wish, creamy (dairy-free) jalapeño slaw and salty crispy sun flower seeds. Truthfully, there’s nothing particularly difficult about this fish taco, it just has a few extra steps than most of my…

Coconut Cinnamon Cold Brew This morning brew is 100% Bali-inspired. It was simply too dang hot and humid in Bali to sip on steaming cups of coffee, instead, Kyle and I sought out huge cups of icy cold brew. With the weather (finally!) heating up in Ontario we've switched over to drinking this smooth and sweet cold coffee as our morning beverage of choice. I've always been a hot coffee kind of gal but thanks to this new recipe I'm officially a cold-brew convert. Not only is this cold brew absolutely delicious, it's also loaded with health benefits. These are the…
