Inflation has officially hit blueberries; they're charging $75 at my favourite fancy grocery in Huntsville! While our property is abundant with wild raspberries and strawberries we've yet to find the elusive Muskoka wild blueberry on our land so we're stuck purchasing ours, for now (pro tip: the health food store in Parry sound has the best prices we've seen). This year I committed to a full basket so we've been thoroughly enjoying using up our precious stash. We have cups vacuum sealed & frozen for colder weather, many many blueberries smoothies & fresh blueberry jam but the standout was this…

These healthy breakfast brownies are a Sunday staple in our house. They come together easily and taste super decadent, but are actually quite healthy! Full of fibre from beans & oats they're basically oatmeal, but sexier (until the beans kick in). The perfect lazy Sunday breakfast in bed (until the beans kick in .. at which point I suggest that you get out of bed). PrintBreakfast Brownies (gluten-free, dairy-free) Oatmeal + beans, in a blender, then bake. Easy peasy and surprisingly delicious.  Ingredients1 can BPA-free black beans1/2 cup pumpkin puree or apple sauce1 tsp baking soda3 eggs1/3 cup maple syrup1/2…

The ‘we got these GIGANTIC carrots in our CSA box this week' muffins. While carrots are often thought of as a 'spring' vegetable they're actually at their best in the winter. When the weather gets cold carrots convert a lot of their starches into sugars to act as a natural protectant against the cooler weather, so they become a lot sweeter in winter; perfect for baking these millet & oat based, perfectly sweet carrot muffins. PrintGluten-Free Vegan Carrot Muffins These gluten-free, dairy-free oat & millet based muffins make the most out of those sweet winter carrots popping up in CSA…

Finally, the 'better late than never' pumpkin coffee cake recipe I promised you guys weeks ago (my apologies, it's busy season at the clinic & life is very full). The good news; with halloween & thanksgiving already come and gone you'll now probably be able to pick up a few cans of organic pumpkin puree on sale at your local health food store, so you're welcome for that. This healthy pumpkin coffee cake is perfectly moist thanks to coconut yogurt & organic pumpkin puree. It also happens to be gluten free and naturally sweetened with maple syrup, making it the…

You guys have been really excited about this recipe on instagram. I was going to make you all wait until it comes out in the spring issue of Whole Family magazine but this is just the kind of recipe that is perfect for snowy February mornings, so it felt cruel to withhold it any longer. Here they are! My favourite breakfast. These low carb, gluten-free scones are a great option when you’re craving something savoury & comforting in the morning. They get their cheesy flavour from B12-rich nutritional yeast and taste fabulous when paired with some cashew cream cheese and smoked…

Happy New Year, from this doctor's 2021 kitchen. Before we get into my much requested cinnamon bun recipe, I'd like to first thank you guys for your patience with me this year. Many of you have been DM-ing and emailing me asking for new recipes, and unfortunately by the end of 2020 I just didn't have anything left over for writing or recipe-developing. This year has been undoubtedly difficult for everyone, and while I've appreciated the forced reframe, new puppy and time at home I have not loved the amount of time, energy and emotion that this year has cost…

If you've been following along for a while now you likely already know that I'm seriously into seed cycling. I'm obsessed with using food as medicine, and love prescribing estrogen-balancing functional foods like flax seeds and pumpkin seeds to help my female patients optimize their hormone levels. So far this year I've helped 2 women get pregnant with this food-based hormone balancing strategy - seeds did the trick after IUI + IVF didn't! You guys, this is powerful stuff. Flax seeds and pumpkin seeds found in this banana flax blender muffin recipe support healthy estrogen production in the first half…

January is thyroid awareness month, which means it's time to introduce you to my favourite daily snack: Brazil nuts. I frequently prescribe brazil nuts to my patients with thyroid disease since they're an incredible source of dietary selenium [3 - 4 nuts = around 250mcg]. Studies show that 200 - 250mcg of selenium can reduce TPO levels by up to a 60%. This is good news for patients suffering with hypothyroidism since TPO is an antibody that causes your immune system to attack your own thyroid tissue leading to autoimmune thyroid disease. Higher selenium dosing of 500mcg (6 - 8 brazil nuts…

I wasn't planning on posting this recipe on the blog. Banana muffins are not seasonally appropriate you guys, and only a crazy fool would turn on the oven in this heat. Sometimes, though, you happen upon genius when you're least expecting it. These are the Albert Einsteins of banana muffins and they are totally worth the bump in your hydro bill in the middle of summer. I created this recipe as a pre-workout treat for my husband Kyle but they'd also make a great breakfast replacement or mid afternoon snack. These muffins are full of fibre + healthy fats and…
