"home grown tomatoes, home grown tomatoes what would life be like without homegrown tomatoes only two things that money can't buy that's true love and home grown tomatoes." - John Denver With ripe late season home grown tomatoes you can really get a away with just a pinch of flakey salt & drizzle of good olive oil, there's nothing better. If you've eaten all the raw sliced tomatoes you can handle and still have a few left from your backyard bounty then I highly suggest this easy, creamy, dairy-free tomato soup. Simply roast your tomatoes, spices, onion + garlic and…

Is it too early for pumpkin content? It's kind of, sort of, starting to feel like fall around here; the morning air is cool and crisp, the days are getting a little shorter. Personally, this doctor is really into seasonally appropriate eating when it comes to maintaining optimal health. As the weather cools I replace my smoothies and salads with warming soups, stews & elixirs to prepare my digestive and immune systems for the cold winter months ahead. Not only is this approach to food better for your health, it's also important for the health of the planet. Studies show us…

You guys have been really excited about this recipe on instagram. I was going to make you all wait until it comes out in the spring issue of Whole Family magazine but this is just the kind of recipe that is perfect for snowy February mornings, so it felt cruel to withhold it any longer. Here they are! My favourite breakfast. These low carb, gluten-free scones are a great option when you’re craving something savoury & comforting in the morning. They get their cheesy flavour from B12-rich nutritional yeast and taste fabulous when paired with some cashew cream cheese and smoked…

Happy New Year, from this doctor's 2021 kitchen. Before we get into my much requested cinnamon bun recipe, I'd like to first thank you guys for your patience with me this year. Many of you have been DM-ing and emailing me asking for new recipes, and unfortunately by the end of 2020 I just didn't have anything left over for writing or recipe-developing. This year has been undoubtedly difficult for everyone, and while I've appreciated the forced reframe, new puppy and time at home I have not loved the amount of time, energy and emotion that this year has cost…

It's SOUP SEASON - the most wonderful time of the year. The leaves are starting to change and that cool fall weather that I love so much is slowly moving in. Fall has always been my favourite season; full of beautiful hikes, comfy sweaters and backyard fires with a glass of good scotch. This soup is the perfect way to welcome autumn while taking advantage of all that corn showing up at the farmers markets this time of year. I don't have a ton else to say about this recipe, other than I highly recommend that it be eaten outside in…

If you guys haven't met freezer fudge yet I suggest that you get acquainted asap. Freezer fudge has been at the top of my list of favourite warm-weather treats a few years now since it's easy to make, requires no baking (hallelujah), and helps cool me down on those extra hot global warming-induced scorchers. They also happen to be low in sugar, and high in healthy fats: the 80's are over my friends, low-fat dieting is out and fat-forward feasting is in! Fat from healthy sources like coconut & avocado is wonderfully satiating, supports a healthy cardiovascular system, reduces your…

This is the perfect recipe for stay-at-home days when you have too much time on your hands. The key to a perfect risotto is love, attention and lots of slow meditative stirring to help you get your mind off of the fact that it looks like we'll be stuck at home for another couple of weeks. It's gloomy and rainy in Ontario, which means it's the perfect day for a big bowl of comforting creamy brown rice - tonight you'll find me in the kitchen listening to Fleetwood Mac records while chopping earthy mushrooms & fresh herbs for this soul-satisfying…

These vegan coconut macaroons were a long time in the making; many bags of shredded coconut were lost to the process of developing an edible (dare I even say, delicious) macaroon recipe free of egg whites and sugar. After months of experiments I've finally nailed the perfect ratios and replacements - just in time for passover. Coconut macaroons are the ideal dessert during the holiday as they do not contain any flour or other 'forbidden' Passover foods and Grandma usually brings out a can of Manischewitz macaroon's at the end of the Passover seder to accompany her homemade apple sauce…

My fascination with this traditional Mexican tortilla filling started last month in a cooking class that I attended while in Mexico. The original dish was delicious (or so I was told), but unfortunately I wasn't able to try it since it was loaded with dairy. I couldn't wait to get back to my kitchen and healthify this protein-packed, poblano-loaded weeknight meal and I'm proud to say I nailed this recipe on the first try! We've made this dish a few times since I've been home it and it makes me smile and think of Mexico every time I whip up a…

I wasn't planning on posting this recipe on the blog. Banana muffins are not seasonally appropriate you guys, and only a crazy fool would turn on the oven in this heat. Sometimes, though, you happen upon genius when you're least expecting it. These are the Albert Einsteins of banana muffins and they are totally worth the bump in your hydro bill in the middle of summer. I created this recipe as a pre-workout treat for my husband Kyle but they'd also make a great breakfast replacement or mid afternoon snack. These muffins are full of fibre + healthy fats and…
