It seems like most celebrities are on big pharma's latest injectable 'wonder drug'. Ozempic and other GLP-1 agonists are a class of medications used to treat type 2 diabetes and obesity. They work by mimicking the action of the hormone glucagon-like peptide 1, which helps to reduce blood sugar & appetite, primarily by slowing down digestion and triggering insulin release from the pancreas. While this drug may work for many it's not without significant cost and a pretty lengthly side effect profile. It also seems to have around a 50/50 success rate from what I'm seeing clinically in my patients,…

All of my patients are either sick or doing a major dietary overhaul right now and this soup is perfect for both scenarios. It's supportive and healing for the immune system thanks to all of the prebiotic vegetables & bone broth, and also happens to make for a delicious, protein-rich 'detox meal'. FYI adequate protein is essential for phase 2 detoxification so those of you that are downing copious amounts of green juice in an attempt to 'cleanse' your way out of 2023 are doing it wrong (click here for access to my winter reset meal plan! full of warming…

"home grown tomatoes, home grown tomatoes what would life be like without homegrown tomatoes only two things that money can't buy that's true love and home grown tomatoes." - John Denver With ripe late season home grown tomatoes you can really get a away with just a pinch of flakey salt & drizzle of good olive oil, there's nothing better. If you've eaten all the raw sliced tomatoes you can handle and still have a few left from your backyard bounty then I highly suggest this easy, creamy, dairy-free tomato soup. Simply roast your tomatoes, spices, onion + garlic and…

If you guys haven't met freezer fudge yet I suggest that you get acquainted asap. Freezer fudge has been at the top of my list of favourite warm-weather treats a few years now since it's easy to make, requires no baking (hallelujah), and helps cool me down on those extra hot global warming-induced scorchers. They also happen to be low in sugar, and high in healthy fats: the 80's are over my friends, low-fat dieting is out and fat-forward feasting is in! Fat from healthy sources like coconut & avocado is wonderfully satiating, supports a healthy cardiovascular system, reduces your…

I wasn't planning on posting this recipe on the blog. Banana muffins are not seasonally appropriate you guys, and only a crazy fool would turn on the oven in this heat. Sometimes, though, you happen upon genius when you're least expecting it. These are the Albert Einsteins of banana muffins and they are totally worth the bump in your hydro bill in the middle of summer. I created this recipe as a pre-workout treat for my husband Kyle but they'd also make a great breakfast replacement or mid afternoon snack. These muffins are full of fibre + healthy fats and…

Periods shouldn't be miserable, they shouldn't be painful or make you want to lose it on everyone you come into contact with. Your cycle shouldn't cause breakouts, or extreme bloating and your period shouldn't require 40+ tampons & an iron transfusion each month. Even though these symptoms may be common, they're not normal! It is possible to have an easy & dare I even say enjoyable cycle when your hormones are balanced and supported with the right foods, exercise and supplements. Seed cycling is my favourite hormone-balancing food therapy. It's cheap, delicious and so incredibly easy to do. You simply…

Hormone Balancing Lemon Blueberry Keto Flax Muffins In healthy women the menstrual cycle should be regular, painless and generally symptom-free. Unfortunately, I rarely see female patients with ‘perfect’ cycles. Irregular periods, infertility & hormonal acne are two of the most common reasons that women seek out my care. Many of weight-loss patients even have hormonal imbalances at the root cause of their inability to lose weight despite diet and exercise. This is due to the fact that women with estrogen dominance have been shown to burn 300 – 400 less calories everyday compared to women with ‘balanced’ hormone levels. Stress,…

This lovely little Valentines day recipe is the ultimate combination of my favourite things: pink, Paris & coconut whipped cream. I'm slightly fixated on all things Parisian, and I'll soon be channeling my inner Parisian it-girl in bed with a big plate of these healthy crepes & a cafe-au-lait (almond milk, always) while flipping through the latest issue of the Paris Review and listening to Serge Gainsbourg albums with my hunny. Valentines day fell on a weekday this year so we decided to postpone our celebrations to this weekend. My husband and I are currently relaxing in Prince Edward County,…

Keto Paleo Pumpkin Muffins Yes, I do realize that we're now officially deep into winter and 'pumpkin season' has technically passed along with my hopes & dreams of warm sunny weather. While fall is most definitely over, pumpkin season lives on in my heart and my kitchen whenever I bake up a batch of these delicious treats. These gluten-free, dairy-free, paleo & keto-friendly muffins are my favourite way to reminisce about fall. They're dense, satisfying and evoke that lovely fall feeling that we're all missing right about now. I've made this recipe with both monk fruit sweetener (keeping it keto)…

Happy fall everyone. I hope you enjoy this quick and healthy (gluten-free/low-sugar/dairy-free) apple crisp recipe from This Doctor's Kitchen.  After a round of apple picking and a CSA box full of local apples we recently found ourselves with a surplus of honeycrisps. A girl (and her husband) can only eat so many apples, so naturally I've found myself incorporating this seasonal favourite into all of my recent baking and cooking. We've made apple muffins, squash & apple soup and even bourbon & maple stewed apples, but my hands-down favourite way to use up apples is in this healthy, yet indulgent apple…
